Brothers Osborne have recorded a new version of Tom Petty’s 1989 hit “Runnin’ Down a Dream” for the soundtrack accompanying Bobby Rahal: True American Racer, adding a country-rock interpretation to the music collection tied to the documentary about the Hall of Fame driver and Indianapolis 500 champion.
The Grammy-winning duo’s rendition of the classic track is among several songs featured on the soundtrack assembled in connection with the Fox Sports and Chassy Media film. The companion album also includes contributions from artists such as Riley Green, Rascal Flatts, Danielle Bradbery, Mackenzie Carpenter, Greylan James, Marfa, Cole Goodwin and The Jack Wharff Band. Earlier this year, Mark Collie and Billy Bob Thornton’s Backbeat Troubadours project released “True American Racer (500 Miles),” featuring Slash, as the documentary’s title song.
Originally released on Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever album, “Runnin’ Down a Dream” became one of the rock icon’s signature songs. The track, co-written by Petty, Jeff Lynne and Mike Campbell, reached No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and has remained a staple of classic rock radio.
Bobby Rahal: True American Racer chronicles Rahal’s rise from aspiring driver to 1986 Indianapolis 500 winner and successful team owner, featuring interviews with figures including Mario Andretti, David Letterman, Danica Patrick and Al Unser Jr. Producers have described the project as a look beyond racing accomplishments to Rahal’s influence on American motorsports.
